The Ujigawa Hydraulics Laboratory, Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University, was established on August 1, 1953, to conduct experimental research aimed at preventing and mitigating disasters related to water and sediment. In 1996, the Disaster Prevention Research Institute was reorganized and positioned as a national joint research institute. The role of our laboratory is not limited to "hydraulic experiments" as its name represented, but has a wide range of field of research, education, and learning as a joint facility for research institutes, researchers, general companies, schools, etc. In 2002, the name of our facility was changed to "Ujigawa Open Laboratory." The Ujigawa Open Laboratory is one of the largest comprehensive experimental facilities in the world with many observation and experimental equipments.
